AAA: Sub-$2 a gallon gas prices may be history

Chris Graham

AAA LogoGas prices leaped double digits across the country within a week.  The average national retail price jumped 11 cents from $2.04 per gallon on January 29, 2015 to $2.15 per gallon today.

Gas prices have been quite volatile since the end of June, and in recent months, motorists have been reaping the benefits of lower gas prices while filling up at the pump, compared to last year.  Just over a week ago, 28 states across the country were posting gasoline averages below $2 per gallon, compared to only 13 states today.

“Many drivers are noticing an uptick in gas prices for the first time in months due to a series of refinery issues in the Midwest,” said Tammy Arnette, Public Affairs Specialist for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “This time of year is also indicative of expected seasonal gas price swings between now and the middle of spring due to scheduled refinery maintenance and decreased production.  However, even with the expected increases this spring, drivers should pay lower gas prices than compared to peak prices in recent years.”

AAA, the trusted source for nationwide gas prices, announced Virginia broke through the $1.99 per gallon gas price average to $2.04 per gallon on average in the Commonwealth.  Comparatively, gas prices are now nine cents higher in Virginia than they were a week ago at $1.95 per gallon on January 29, 2015.
