#8 JMU women's lax knocks off Yale

The #8 James Madison women’s lacrosse team remained unbeaten on the season with a 9-5 victory against Yale on a cold, rainy Wednesday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.

JMU, which entered the game ranked 10th in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association poll and eighth in the Inside Lacrosse poll, improved to 4-0 this season, while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-4.

JMU junior midfielder Ashley Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton) tied for a game-high two goals, while senior Mary Kate Lomady (Abington, Pa./Abington) had one goal, two assists and two caused turnovers.

Dukes’ junior midfielder Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy) also had a good showing for the Dukes with one goal and one assist to go with a pair of caused turnovers and a game-high five draw controls.

Yale took the early 1-0 lead with 2:45 into the game on a goal by junior Caroline Crow (Davidsonville, Md./Severn), but JMU tied things up shortly after on a free-position goal by senior Caitlin Sullivan (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison) with 22:31 remaining.

That goal sparked a 3-0 run by the Dukes and they would not lose the lead the rest of the way. The Bulldogs got to within one goal on two separate occasions but could never get any closer.

After Yale cut the lead to 4-3 with 2:52 to go before halftime, Lomady found junior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) 40 seconds later, and she buried it in the back of the net to give JMU a 5-3 lead into break.

That tally started a 4-0 run by JMU that was capped off with a goal by McHugh from Lomady with 11:01 remaining.

JMU held a 27-20 advantage in the shot department, and redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest) picked up the win in net with nine saves. The Dukes won the draw control battle 11-5 and had an 8-5 lead in caused turnovers.

Yale was led sophomore Devon Rhodes (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) and sophomore Kelsea Smith (Yardley, Pa./Lawrenceville), who each scored two goals. Senior Myra Trivellas (Chadds Ford, Pa./Tower Hill) had a team-high three draw controls , while senior Fielding Kidd (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) caused a game-high three turnovers.
