#4 UVA blitzes Morgan State, 83-45

Contributors

UVA basketballFourth-ranked UVA took care of business Monday night, defeating overmatched Morgan State, 83-45.

After beating back-to-back Top 25 Big 10 opponents, the ‘Hoos (8-0) didn’t have to work too hard in this one.

Morgan State (2-5) doesn’t own a win over a team ranked in the top 320 of the KenPom.com rankings, though to their credit the Bears were coming off a respectable 82-75 loss at George Mason last week.

There was nothing respectable to this one. Virginia led 18-9 five minutes in, and a 12-0 run late in the first half fueled a 47-23 halftime advantage.

The second half was a slog. Morgan State didn’t break 30 until a pair of free throws by Sherwin Devonish-Prince Jr. with 3:57 left.

Kyle Guy and De’Andre Hunter each had 15 points to lead Virginia.

The most entertaining parts to the game – saying that generously, because this one was a snoozer – were the two-handed breakaway dunk by Guy, his third career dunk, an open-court behind-the-back dribble effort from Jack Salt; and a UVA full-court press that forced a Morgan State turnover and 10-second backcourt violation on back-to-back first-half possessions.

That, and manager Grant Kersey notched a career-high five points.
