The top-ranked Virginia baseball team earned a rain-shortened 4-0 win over Georgetown Tuesday evening at Davenport Field. The teams played five innings in one hour, 11 minutes before heavy rain and lightning forced the game to be stopped. The game then was called after a 47-minute delay.
Virginia starting pitcher Will Roberts (Jr., Richmond, Va.) improved to 7-0 this season after allowing two hits in five innings while facing just one batter over the minimum. Roberts now has pitched 26-consecutive scoreless innings, most by a UVa pitcher since Sean Doolittle recorded 26 straight scoreless frames in 2005.
Roberts lowered his ERA to 0.87 this year. He earned his second shutout of the season and the 10th for Virginia (32-3) in 2011. UVa is now one shutout shy of the school single-season record of 11, which also is tied for the ACC record with the 1977 Clemson team. Behind Roberts, UVa now has recorded four straight Tuesday shutouts.
Steven Proscia (Jr., Suffern, N.Y.) provided the big bat for the Cavaliers, going 3-for-3 with a three-run home run.
James Heine (0-1) allowed four runs and four hits in four innings for the Hoyas (18-17). Sean Lamont had both of Georgetown’s hits.
Virginia scored its first run in the opening inning without the benefit of a hit. Leadoff hitter Chris Taylor (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a groundout by John Barr (Sr., Ivyland, Pa.). A Heine wild pitch advanced Taylor to third, and he scored on a passed ball.
UVa scored three in the third inning when Proscia swatted a three-run homer to left-center field. It was Proscia’s third long ball of the year and gave him a team-high 37 RBI this year. Proscia now has 160 career RBI – fifth in UVa history and just seven shy of Doolittle’s record of 167.
