James Madison baseball head coach Spanky McFarland has announced coaching staff promotions with Ted White elevated to the top assistant coach position and Brandon Cohen hired full time in the second position for the 2013 season.
“Ted White has been with the program for five years and, in that time, we have won two regular season titles and two tournament titles,” commented McFarland. “He was a big part of that success. He has also been very active recruiting and even more so in the past two years. He is ready for this and will do a great job as both the offensive coach and as the recruiting coordinator.”
White arrived at JMU in the fall of 2007 and made an immediate impact in aiding the Dukes to the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association title, the first in program history. Madison went on to capture the league title in 2011 while also finishing first in the regular season in consecutive seasons in 2010 and 2011.
Heading into the 2012-13 season, White will serve as the recruiting coordinator for the Dukes as well as managing the offense and serving as third base coach. While at JMU, White has been heavily involved working with pitchers and catchers, highlighted by consecutive fourth-round draft picks in 2010 CAA Pitcher of the Year Kevin Munson and 2011 CAA Player of the Year Jake Lowery.
White played collegiately at Louisiana-Monroe and graduated in 2002. His other coaching stops have included McNeese State, Pittsburgh, Gulf Coast Community College, LSU and the local Valley Baseball League’s Front Royal Cardinals.
As for Cohen, McFarland commented, “Brandon joined our staff in the fall as the volunteer coach after a successful playing career in college and the pros. He is a great young coach on his way up. He also has a lot of recruiting ties in the northeast.”
Cohen will assist White working with the offense and will fill the first base coaching box. Prior to JMU, he played professionally in the independent Frontier League and worked as a hitting instructor near his home in New Jersey. He was drafted by the Twins in 2002 and went on to attend Seton Hall, graduating in 2006 as a two-time team captain.
White fills the top assistant spot vacated by former associate head coach Jay Sullenger in December while Cohen steps into White’s assistant spot after joining the staff in the fall as a volunteer coach.
