mary baldwin universityA new face has joined the Fighting Squirrels as sports information director, helping to tell the story of the burgeoning Mary Baldwin University athletics program.

Ryan Legarsky comes to MBU from in-conference peer Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C., where he served as the primary contact for 10 intercollegiate teams as the assistant sports information director.

He previously supported athletics departments at California University of Pennsylvania and Waynesburg University, where he also earned his master’s degree in sport management and bachelor of arts in sports broadcasting/sports information, respectively.

“I am thrilled to accept the position of sports information director and look forward to assisting in marketing the athletic programs here at Mary Baldwin University,” Legarsky said. “I would like to thank the Department of Athletics and the university as a whole for giving me the opportunity to grow professionally in the field and assist in building the brand that is Mary Baldwin athletics. It’s a great time for MBU and its athletics programs and I look forward to the future.”

Legarsky’s experience includes writing news releases, game recaps, previews and feature stories. He has worked with the media on athletics coverage and has created athletics marketing materials. With an interest in broadcasting, Legarsky has also acted as play-by-play broadcaster and public address announcer for several sports and has set up audio/visual for home game broadcasts.

“Ryan brings to the sports information director role at Mary Baldwin a combination of education, experience, and passion for sports that make him a great addition to our athletics department team,” said MBU Provost Ty Buckman. “That his most recent position was as assistant SID at Methodist University, one of our conference peers, means that he not only understands NCAA Division III athletics and all that our programs offer to student athletes, he also knows the USA South and even knows Mary Baldwin. We are fortunate that a young professional with his potential has decided to take the next step in his career as a Fighting Squirrel.”

The Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels are experiencing an athletics renaissance of late, as the school aligns its athletics program with a successful enrollment strategy that has netted its largest class in history.

Founded in 1842, Mary Baldwin University is a small, coeducational university offering a range of degree programs from bachelor to doctoral. It serves a vibrant student population on its main campus in Staunton, Virginia, at its nearby health sciences campus in Augusta County, online, and through regional advising centers throughout Virginia.
