JMU hoops gets win in exhibition

James Madison defeated Philadelphia 67-51 in an exhibition game on Sunday afternoon in the JMU Convocation Center. It was the third straight year that JMU defeated Philadelphia in its lone exhibition contest.

Denzel Bowles (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) and Humpty Hitchens (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) led the Dukes with 15 points each. Philadelphia’s Jimmy Connolly led all scorers with 16 points and junior Rayshawn Goins (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville) contributed 10 points and six rebounds for the Dukes.

JMU capitalized off of Philadelphia’s 28 team turnovers and tallied 15 steals. JMU shot 48.2 percent from the field while its opponent shot only 28.0 percent.

The Dukes led by a four-point margin at halftime, 27-23. JMU held a 12-point lead with 6:29 remaining in the first half before Philadelphia rallied to take a one-point lead off of a three-pointer by Nick Christian. JMU outscored its opponent 40-28 in the second half to secure the win.

JMU’s 2010-11 season opener will be at Kansas State in Manhattan Kan. in the 2010 O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic at 9 p.m. Eastern time. The Wildcats begin the season ranked third nationally according to the preseason AP poll.
