Generals in first after win at Covington

Seth Lucio finally gave up a run, but after a rough first inning, the Tennessee Tech righthander settled down to lead Waynesboro to an 8-1 win on the road at Covington Friday night.

Lucio (2-0) had not allowed a run in 11 innings in two appearances overall coming in, but a Ryan Roberson two-out RBI double ended the scoreless streak and tied the game at 1-1.

A Jacob Hoyle RBI double that scored Caleb Palensky from first had gotten the Generals on the board in the top of the first.

Waynesboro took a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI fielder’s choice by Devin Smith.

A four-run sixth broke open a pitchers’ duel between Lucio and Zach Fleshman (0-1), who gave up RBI hits to JoJo Woods and Bradley Noland that gave Waynesboro a 4-1 lead at that point before being lifted for a relief pitcher.

The Generals added two more in the sixth frame on an RBI fielder’s choice by Julian Ridings and an RBI single by Hoyle.

Brandon Murray hit a long two-run homer in the ninth to finish out the scoring.

The win lifts Waynesboro into first place in the South Division with an 8-3 record. Harrisonburg (9-4) is now percentage points behind in second after losing 3-2 to New Market.

Waynesboro will host New Market Saturday at Kate Collins Field. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
