Dowling tapped for Under Armour Senior Bowl

Virginia cornerback Ras-I Dowling has been selected to play in the 2011 Under Armour Senior Bowl. The 2011 game is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 29th in Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium. NFL Network will televise the game and all practices live. Dowling joins UVa teammate Danny Aiken in the annual senior game.

Dowling entered his final season at UVa on three national award watch lists that are handed out by the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA). The Chesapeake, Va., native was on the Chuck Bednarik Award, Nagurski Trophy and Thorpe Award Watch Lists. He was also a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

“This is a very talented group of ACC players and all are extremely deserving of a Senior Bowl invite,” Senior Bowl President and CEO Steve Hale said. “We’ve always had great success with ACC players with guys like Philip Rivers and Virginia’s D’Brickashaw Ferguson performing extremely well during Senior Bowl week and we fully expect this year to produce more future NFL stars from the conference.”

Dowling was injured most of 2010 after earning his second-straight second team All-ACC nod, anchoring the ACC’s No. 4 and the nation’s No. 21 pass defense in 2009. Dowling finished the 2009 season ranked No. 6 in the ACC in passes defended (11) and No. 11 in interceptions (three). Entering 2010 he was a College Football Insider preseason All-American (second team). He appeared in five games in 2010 and made 15 tackles, including a season-best eight against Florida State.

Despite missing most of his senior campgain with injuries, Dowling is listed as the No. 4 cornerback in the 2011 NFL Draft by ESPN’s Mel Kiper.

This is the third-straight season at least two Cavaliers will represent UVa in the Under Armour Senior Bowl. In 2010 Chris Cook and Rashawn Jackson participated in the showcase, while Cedric Peerman, John Phillips and Clint Sintim appeared in the 2009 game.
