Covington outlasts Waynesboro in 10, 4-3

wlogo2Tyler Fox didn’t give up a hit until the sixth inning, but Covington rallied from an early deficit to defeat Waynesboro in 10 innings, 4-3, on Wednesday.

Fox (freshman, Nebraska-Omaha) took a perfect game into the sixth inning, when Mike Gilbert singled off the glove of third baseman Anthony Iacomini (junior, Cortland State).

Waynesboro led 1-0 after a fifth-inning RBI single by Tyler Bocock (sophomore, Stetson) scored JoJo Woods (junior, Central Florida) from second. Covington broke through with two runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Alex Falconi and Andy Austin, but the Generals answered in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runs on an RBI groundout by Patrick Mazeika (freshman, Stetson) and an RBI single by Iacomini that pushed Waynesboro back on top, 3-2.

The Lumberjacks tied it in the eighth off reliever David Spinosa (sophomore, Columbia) on an RBI single by Anthony Dimino. Waynesboro had chances to win the game in the eighth and ninth, but left runners at the corners in the eighth and a runner at first in the ninth.

Covington seized control of the game in the 10th off reliever Latten Gailbraith (junior, Louisiana Tech), scoring on an RBI single by Matthew Gandy.

The Generals went down in order in the bottom of the 10th.

The win pulls Covington to two and a half games back of Waynesboro for the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division with eight games to go.
