Chris Graham: Should the Redskins bench RG3? Sure!

redskins-helmetFor whatever reason, Washington Redskins fans have begun debating the idea that the team’s 0-2 start is a reason to replace 2012 Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III at quarterback.

Actually, I don’t think it’s a bad idea, and here’s why. I’m thinking like Texas coach Mack Brown, who famously recruited RG3 not as a quarterback, but as a cornerback.

(Ol’ Mack did the same with another future Heisman Trophy-winning QB from Texas, Johnny Manziel. Good moves for a coach who’s on his way out the door.)

Back to the idea of moving RG3 to corner: That’s where the ‘Skins need the most help.

Washington is dead last in the NFL through two weeks in total defense, giving up (gasp!) 511.5 yards per game and 35.5 points per game. The Redskins are also dead last in pass-efficiency defense, allowing opposing QBs to put up a QB rating of 135.9, completing a league-high 73.1 percent of their passes without recording a single interception.

The gimpy-kneed RG3 might not be the best option for turning things around back in the defensive backfield, but, dang … it can’t get much worse than it is right now, can it?

The idea that RG3 needs to move out just to give the ball to Kirk Cousins is laughable. Washington is eighth in the NFL in passing yards, and Griffin’s QB rating (89.6) is 16th in the league. Middle-of-the-road, sure, and a step back from his breathtaking rookie season, but still solid nonetheless.

Let’s put our attention back to where it needs to be: what we call the team.

(Yeah, they’re still the Redskins here. You might have noticed that already.)
