Charlottesville to open cooling centers as heat wave approaches

CharlottesvilleThe City of Charlottesville will designate Herman Key Recreation Center, Carver Recreation Center, and Tonsler Recreation Center as cooling centers beginning Thursday, June 11th through Sunday, June 14th for those affected by the extreme high temperatures expected in the area this week.

Key Recreation Center is located at 800 East Market Street (at the end of the Downtown Mall adjacent to the nTelos Wireless Pavilion). The hours of operation are MondayFriday from 12pm-9pm; Saturday and Sunday from 1pm-6pm.

Carver Recreation Center is located at 233 4th St. NW in the Jefferson School City Center adjacent to the upper parking deck on 4th St. NW. The hours of operation are 6am-9pm Monday through Thursday; 6am-8pm Friday; 8am-6pm Saturday;12pm-6pm Sunday.

Tonsler Recreation Center is located at 501 Cherry Avenue. The hours of operation are 2pm-9pm Monday through Friday; Saturday 1pm-6pm; ClosedSunday.

City staff, a phone, and water are accessible at both locations.
