ur-spiders1Richmond men’s basketball’s Rob Jones has been promoted to associate head coach, head coach Chris Mooney announced today.

“Rob has been with us for all of my years here at Richmond,” Mooney said. “He has played an integral part in our success over the last decade, and has worked diligently to help our student-athletes, our coaches and our program. He is very deserving of this promotion, and he will continue to guide this program to success.”

Jones begins his 11th season on the staff this summer, having spent the last seven years as an assistant coach after working as a director of operations for Richmond.

Originally from Jefferson City, Mo., has helped guide the Spiders to five 20-win seasons, six postseason appearances and final national rankings of No. 24 in 2009-10 and No. 21 in 2010-11. Richmond has averaged 21.5 wins per season over the last six years and has finished in the top-100 of the RPI in four of the last five seasons.

He is currently responsible for player development, on-court coaching, recruiting, opponent scouting and game preparation. He also monitors the academic progress of the student-athletes.

“I am truly honored to be promoted to the role of associate head coach,” Jones said. “I take tremendous pride in this program, and consider it a great privilege to serve in this position. I am grateful to Coach Mooney for giving me the opportunity to coach under his leadership for the past 10 seasons. I am excited about the future of our program and will continue to work diligently to build on its great tradition.”

Prior to Richmond, Jones was an assistant coach at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

Jones fills the associate head coach position previously held by Jamal Brunt who departed for Miami this spring.
