Nats rally from big early deficit, top Atlanta, 13-12

nationals_logoA three-run ninth-inning Dan Uggla homer completed a dramatic Nats comeback in a 13-12 Washington win at Atlanta Tuesday night.

The Braves led 9-1 after two innings, knocking out Nationals rookie starter A.J. Cole, who gave up seven Atlanta runs in the second in his first career Major League start.

It was 10-2 Atlanta entering the fifth, when Washington got four back, the big blow being a two-out, three-run homer by Jose Lobaton, his first of the season.

Down 11-8 in the seventh, Uggla laced a two-run triple to plate Lobaton and Bryce Harper to cut the lead to one.

The Braves added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by A.J. Pierzynski that made it 12-10 Atlanta.

That’s where it was in the ninth, when Lobaton singled off Braves closer Jason Grilli with one out. Danny Espinosa walked on a borderline 3-2 pitch, setting the stage for Uggla, who laced a shot deep into the seats in left to give Washington the late lead.

Drew Storen closed things out in the bottom of the ninth for his fifth save.

The win breaks a five-game Nats losing streak.
