Davidson opened the contest with an 8-0 run and never looked back, defeating George Mason men’s basketball, 92-71, in John M. Belk Arena. The Patriots shot 55.8 percent from the field, while the Wildcats were 48.2 percent.
Davidson led by 20, 50-30, at the halftime break after shooting 53.6 percent in the first half. Five Wildcats finished the game in double-figures led by Brian Sullivan with 19 points. Sullivan, who was held scoreless in the second half, scored his 1,000th-career point Wednesday night. Tyler Kalinoski and Jordan Barham each added 18 points, while Jordan Watkins and Oskar Michelsen added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Davidson finished 38.7 percent beyond the arc going 12-for-31 fueled by three triples from Sullivan.
Shevon Thompson led four Patriots in double-figures with 14 points and notched his 12th double-double of the season with 13 rebounds. Mason won the rebounding battle, 35-29, and outscored the Wildcats in the paint, 44-24.
Davidson converted 16 Mason turnovers into 27 points and finished 26-for-32 at the free throw line. Mason shook off a shaky start, erasing an early double-digit deficit to the Wildcats, cutting the score down to a single possession on a Thompson layup with 14:35 to go. But that would be the closest the Patriots would come the remainder of the game. After leading by 20 at the break, Davidson opened its largest lead of 28 points at the11:58 mark following back-to-back triples from Kalinoski and Watkins.
