JMU’s Ty McFarland named to all-state baseball team

jmu logoJames Madison senior third baseman Ty McFarland (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) was named First Team All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) this week.

McFarland was selected in the 10th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the New York Yankees.  He made his professional debut with the Class-A Short Season Staten Island Yankees on June 15th by going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Through 26 games, he has a team-high .291 batting average and has 19 RBIs.

McFarland was also named to the All-CAA and American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region First Teams as a senior.  In 2014, he recorded a .317 batting average, 53 starts, 72 hits, 47 runs, 12 doubles, nine home runs, 37 RBIs and 21 walks.  He ranked third in the CAA this year in total bases (115), fourth in hits, fourth in home runs, fifth in runs scored and eighth in RBIs.

In his career, he hit .315 in 196 games with 180 runs scored, 46 doubles, five triples, 15 home runs, 131 RBIs, 342 total bases and 105 walks.  In addition to being named First Team All-CAA as a senior, he was also named Third Team All-CAA as a freshman and sophomore and was a Freshman All-American.

VaSID selected Virginia’s head coach Brian O’Connor as the Coach of the Year and pitcher Nathan Kirby as Pitcher of the Year as the Cavaliers had 10 total All-State recipients.  William and Mary’s Michael Katz was named Player of the Year and Liberty’s Parker Bean was named Rookie of the Year.
