Newcomer Anthony Gill scored 13 points, and Malcolm Brogdon, back from an injury that cost him the entirety of the 2012-2013 season, had nine points and six rebounds, to lead #24 UVa. to a workmanlike 61-41 win over JMU in Friday’s season opener for both teams.
The game was won, as many are on Cavs’ coach Tony Bennett’s watch, with defense. Virginia limited the Dukes, fresh off the 2013 CAA Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance, to just 14 points in the first half on 5-of-25 shooting from the floor.
Virginia led at that point 32-14, and JMU never seriously threatened in the second half.
Mike Tobey added 10 points and Darion Atkins had eight points and 11 rebounds. Senior Joe Harris, last year’s leading scorer, had just five points but did pull down seven rebounds.
Tom Vodanovich led JMU with 11 points.
UVa. outrebounded JMU 45-27 and shot 41.7 percent from the floor (25-of-60) while holding the Dukes to 31.3 percent shooting (15-of-48) for the game.
Virginia will face #14 VCU Tuesday night.
