A 14-5 first-half run put North Carolina ahead to stay, and a 13-0 second-half run sealed the deal as the third-seeded Tar Heels blew past the sixth-seeded Florida State Seminoles 83-62 Friday in the 2013 ACC Tournament quarterfinals.
With the win, North Carolina (23-9) advances to a Saturday semifinal matchup with Maryland (22-11) at 3 p.m.
At 1 p.m. Monday, top seed Miami (25-6) faces #5 seed North Carolina State (24-9) in the other semifinal.
UNC had a battle on its hands early. A pair of Devon Bookert free throws gave Florida State (18-15) a 22-21 lead with 7:38 to go in the first half. The Tar Heels took control with defense, holding the Seminoles without a field goal for 8:30 as they built up a 35-27 halftime lead.
After FSU pulled to 35-30 on a Michael Snaer three-pointer 25 seconds into the second half and then cut the margin to four at 39-35 on an Okaro White dunk at 17:23, North Carolina went on a 13-0 run over the next 3:08 to push the lead to 17 at 52-35.
FSU would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way.
Hairston led four Carolina players in double figures with 21 points. Snaer scored 20 to lead Florida State in his final ACC game.
