In his email newsletter, Sixth District Congressman Ben Cline writes with pride about voting against Democratic-sponsored efforts to reform the Supreme Court. He claims Republicans “enshrined” the number of justices at nine, and pretends they would never modify the Court for political gain.
The Constitution says little about the Court, but does delegate its organization to Congress. Congress has updated the number of justices several times, the last in 1869. After 157 years, it could be time for a change.
Nothing about the Court is “enshrined.” History has many examples of cases in which the Court changed its mind. Women were sure Roe v. Wade enshrined their reproductive rights, until the Court took them away. Minorities believed the Voting Rights Act protected them, until the Court gutted the law.
Too often recently, we have had a Supine Court that bent to the president’s will.
Surveys by Gallup found that only 39% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the Court. Pew Research Center found 56% of respondents believed the justices do only a fair-to-poor job of keeping politics out of their decisions. Studies by Marquette Law School found overwhelming (79% to 89%) support for term limits and a strict code of ethics.
Ben Cline is out of touch. He simply repeats the talking points his MAGA masters dictate. He is unable to represent our district adequately.
We need a representative who listens to the voters she works for. That’s why we need to elect Beth Macy.
