I can’t say why the latest whatever-that-was from Donald Trump, who today wished a “Happy Labor Day to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics, Communists, and Dumocrats who will do anything possible to destroy our Country,” hit me a particular way today.
It just … did.
All I can think is: have we no shame anymore?
We can be on different teams – and that’s all politics is for 99.8 percent of y’all, your team, which is better than the other team, just because.
Root for your team all you want, is my perspective on that.
But keep in mind, people on the other team don’t want to “destroy our Country,” just because they’re on the other team.
Real question here: why did a plurality of y’all vote three times for this guy?
You don’t really think that people on the other team want to “destroy our Country,” do you?
I suppose I’m one of those “Radical Left Lunatics, Communists, and Dumocrats” that Trump is referring to in his “Happy Labor Day to all” post.
I’m a Radical Left Lunatic, Communist, and Dumocrat to Trump because I think we need to use our government to create a standard of equality of opportunity, and hold everybody – the 1 percent, the billion- and trillion-dollar corporations, the middle class, the rest – to account.
And because I think access to healthcare is a universal human right, as do the citizens of every other democratic society on the planet.
I don’t see how supporting equality of opportunity and universal healthcare makes me “Radical,” a “Communist” or “Dum.”
And I don’t get how anyone out there wants to have somebody who talks like this about fellow Americans should be in any kind of leadership position.
We can disagree on military spending, or the degree to which the right to own assault weapons should be considered paramount, or the ability of people to seek gender-affirming care – we can disagree on everything!
Me thinking differently than Donald Trump on how we can continue to strive to make America a better place to live doesn’t mean I should have to settle for having the elected head of the government of the United States of America referring to me, and a 170 million people like me, as a “Radical,” a “Communist,” “Dum,” as somebody who wants to “destroy our Country.”
It’s healthy for us to be able to disagree without being disagreeable; we can all learn from each other and our opposing viewpoints.
Me personally, I always feel like I end up a little smarter, a little wiser, when I’m confronted on a point on something near and dear to my belief system, and have to examine things from another’s perspective.
The Trump approach – if you think differently than I do, you’re the enemy – that’s not American.
We can do better than that.
Going forward, let’s make it a pledge to try.
