Hislop leads Dukes past Wichita State: Senior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) scored 30 points to lead James Madison (3-3) to a 63-58 win over Wichita State (2-4) in in the Cancun Challenge women’s basketball tournament Saturday at Moon Palace Resort.
Hislop reached the 30-point mark for the second time in three games after scoring a career-high 32 in the Dukes’ overtime win over Green Bay on Thursday. Also in double figures for JMU was redshirt senior guard Jasmine Gill (Greensboro, N.C./Page), who had her first JMU double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
There were seven ties and 15 lead changes before JMU used a 13-4 run midway through the second half to take the lead for good. Hislop scored seven of those points, including a layup off a steal to cap the run and give JMU a 48-40 advantage with 7:38 left. Gill added four points during the stretch.
The Dukes pushed their lead to 11, 59-48, on a driving layup by senior forward Nikki Newman (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) with 2:57 to play.
But the Shockers, buoyed by 3-pointers by Jessica Diamond and Danice Fountain, outscored JMU 10-2 in just under two minutes to close the gap to three, 61-58, on Fountain’s trey with nine seconds left.
Hislop, however, iced the game with 7.3 seconds to go as she connected on both ends a 1+1 free throw for the final 63-58 margin.
JMU held a 43-36 advantage in rebounding and shot 42 percent (25-59) to 38 percent (21-55) for Wichita State.
Hot starts lifts Miami: Miami (Ohio) jumped out to a quick 22-4 lead out of the gate and went on to defeat James Madison 76-58 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall.
MU improved to 3-2 while JMU fell to 1-4, all on the road or neutral.
The RedHawks used a quick 9-0 spurt in the first minute and a half as part of an overall 22-4 run in the opening eight minutes. JMU got as close as eight at 28-20 at the eight-minute mark but could not break double digits in the second half.
Reggie Johnson led Miami with 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting to lead four players in double figures. Jon Harris added 15 points and eight rebounds. Will Felder added 12 points and seven boards while Quinten Rollins had a double-double with 10 points, 10 assists and six rebounds.
Senior guard Devon Moore (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) had a season-high 17 points, including 15 in the first half, to lead James Madison. Senior forward Rayshawn Goins (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville) added 14 points and seven boards. Freshman guard Ron Curry (Pennsauken, N.J./Paul VI) had a season high with 10 points.
Miami hit eight of its first 11 attempts, including a trio of three-point field goals, to build the early advantage. The RedHawks shot 49 percent for the game and hit nine of their 23 attempts from the arc (39 percent).
JMU shot 38 percent for the game while struggling overall from the field in the second half with 33 percent from the floor and 23 percent from the arc (3-for-13). Overall, the Dukes hit just 5-of-20 from long distance for the game. Miami led the rebounding battle 35-28.
Miami got off to the hot start from the opening tip with a three-point play, JMU turnover, a made three-pointer, a JMU turnover and another three-pointer marking a quick 9-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. The RedHawks continued to push the advantage to 22-4 at the 12-minute mark and to a high point of 19 points at 26-7 with 9:04 to go.
However, Moore began to assert himself in the offense and the Dukes held the RedHawks scoreless for four minutes to crawl back as close as eight points at 28-20. Miami built the lead back to 16 at 37-21 before JMU scored the final five points for a 37-26 margin at the break.
Moore scored 15 of JMU’s last 19 points in the half to lead all players. His season high had been 13 at Duquesne. Goins had seven in the half for the Dukes, who were hurt by 10 turnovers and a 6-for-13 performance at the free throw line in the first period.
Miami was hot out of the gate, starting 8-for-11 from the field. The RedHawks cooled off to go 12-for-25 (48 percent) for the half with Harris leading the way with 10.
After five straight away from home to open the season, the Dukes will play their home opener on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against George Washington.
