Warner in 2013? Senator mum on gubernatorial run

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner didn’t rule out a run for governor in 2013 in an interview with NBC12 in Richmond on Friday.

Asked by “First at 4” anchor Ryan Nobles to address speculation that he is considering a run for governor next year, Warner conceded that “it’s no news flash that sometimes the Senate frustrates me.”

“But what I’m focused on, I want to help the president get re-elected, I want to send Tim Kaine to the Senate, and then I’ve got a job to do on this debt and deficit. If we don’t get that fixed, whoever the mayor is, whoever the governor is, whoever the Senate is, our country is going to be a lot less prosperous going forward. One thing at a time,” Warner said.

Nobles then pressed the issues in a followup.

“So you’re not ruling it out yet?”

“Listen, Ryan, I am focuzed on this year’s election, and trying to get debt and deficit done,” Warner said.

“Sounds like you didn’t rule it out,” Nobles said.

Several polls, including a recent Washington Post poll, suggest that Warner would be a heavy favorite in the 2013 governor’s race if he were to run.

Warner was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2008. His term would be up for election again in 2014.
