A 61-year-old woman is dead, and three people received serious injuries after a crash Sunday in Lee County.

Deborah L. Wires, 61, of Rose Hill, was taken to an area hospital where she later died.

A 7-year-old child suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, according to Virginia State Police.

The accident occurred at 2:12 p.m. on Route 15 when a Nissan SUV, driven by Wires, was traveling westbound. At the intersection with Burning Well Road, Wires was unable to avoid a Lincoln which had pulled into the intersection from a stop sign.

The driver of the Lincoln, Donald Grabeel, 86, suffered serious injuries, as did an adult passenger in the Lincoln. Both were taken to area hospitals.

The crash remains under investigation.
