Virginia Tech | Michael Vick in the mix: This has to be a joke, right?

A CBSSports.com report has it that Michael Vick would “definitely” be interested in the coaching job at his alma mater, Virginia Tech.

Of course Michael Vick, who is in his first year as the head coach at Norfolk State, an FCS program, would be interested in the Virginia Tech job.

The question would be: why in a million years would Virginia Tech be interested in Michael Vick?

Richard Johnson at CBS Sports is reporting that Tech expects Vick “to be in the mix” for the job, and that Vick, according to the report, “would be willing to listen, since Virginia Tech is a ‘special place’ for him, but also wants to ‘get Norfolk State right too.”’

This can’t be real.

Seriously, somebody must be pulling this Richard Johnson guy’s leg.

We’re to just accept that Virginia Tech would even give a thought to giving the keys to its football program to a first-year FCS coach, with no ties in the coaching industry to be able to recruit a Power 4-level staff, who served time in federal prison on a conviction in one of the more disgusting animal-abuse cases any of us can remember?

The notion that hiring Vick would get the alums to open up their checkbooks is laughable.

News flash: as the AD, Whit Babcock, has made abundantly clear, Virginia Tech doesn’t have enough alums with checkbooks to be able to compete.

On top of that, Vick’s checkered past would risk turning off as many check-writers as it would elicit more in the way of a warchest.

This has to be a joke.

Whoever in the Virginia Tech administration would be involved in making that reachout should be immediately fired for cause.
