Chris Graham: The Sarah Palin ‘mistake’

Chris Graham

The right-wing echosphere is howling once again. Another lefty critic has come down hard on Sarah Palin.

“Based on her background she’d only been governor for what, two years. I don’t think she passed that test … of being ready to take over, and I think that was a mistake.”

Damn liberals. Why can’t they get it through their pointy little socialist heads? Sarah Palin was …

Wait a sec. That wasn’t a lefty liberal point-little-headed socialist.

That was Dick Cheney.

You know, pretty much the anti-lefty liberal point-little-headed socialist.

Indeed, it was Cheney, the former vice president, who suggested that Palin wasn’t a good choice.

Talking in an interview with ABC News, Cheney, who famously headed up the George W. Bush vice-presidential search effort that led to him recommending himself for the #2 spot, went over how the vetting process should go, with the idea being to winnow down the long list of possible choices to a short list.

“The test to get on that small list has to be, Is this person capable of being president of the United States?” Cheney said.

I liked the response from 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain in an interview Monday morning on Fox News.

“I’m always glad to get comments four years later,” McCain said. “Look, I respect the vice-president. He and I had strong disagreements as to whether we should torture people or not. I don’t think we should have. But the fact is that I’m proud of Sarah Palin.”

The timing of all of this is most interesting, given that we’re in the T-minus time as far as presumptive 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s vice-presidential vetting is concerned.

Palin is not likely to be anywhere near Romney’s short list, so I’m not thinking that Cheney is bringing the issue up to try to steer him away from going that route.

I think Palin is just collateral damage as Cheney, maybe speaking on behalf of the party establishment, attempts to use the public airwaves to steer Romney in the direction of making an, ahem, safer choice for VP.

I also see Romney as perhaps perceiving that he’s under pressure from the right wing of the GOP to throw caution to the wind to nominate a strong social conservative to balance out his country-club Republican personna.

It will be an interesting next couple of weeks for Team Romney as they try to wade through this minefield.

In the meantime, Cheney is a pointy-headed liberal now.

Who woulda thunk it?

Augusta County voters: A resounding ‘no’ on school construction tax

Augusta County voters, known for kicking themselves in the genitals, shot down, by a wide margin, millions of dollars for school construction from a 1 percent local sales tax that none of them would have noticed. Instead, they either get property-tax increases, or, more likely, schools that will continue to fall in on themselves. You...
