A pair of two-out, two-run singles and eight scoreless innings from starter Seth Lucio was enough to withstand a three-run ninth-inning rally as Waynesboro beat Staunton 4-3 Thursday night.
Lucio (1-0) was masterful in his first start of 2012 for General, striking out nine, giving up five hits and walking one. Lucio, who earned a three-inning save in Waynesboro’s 14-4 win over New Market on Sunday, has now logged 11 scoreless innings to start the season.
A two-out second-inning single by left fielder Jeff Conley scored Devin Smith and Caleb Palensky to give the Generals the early 2-0 lead. It would stay that way until the sixth, when catcher Tyrone Smith singled through the right side with two outs to score Austin Johnston and Jacob Hoyle to make it 4-0 Waynesboro.
Staunton got on the board in the ninth with the big blow being a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Jermaine Berry, but Josh Bullock struck out Ryan Johnston to get the third out and record his first save of the season.
Waynesboro (3-2) hosts Covington (1-3) at Kate Collins Field on Friday night. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
