Star gazers will soon have more time to take in the night sky as Waynesboro’s Sunset Park prepares to extend its hours.

One week from today, on March 11, the city will extend the hours to stay open until 10 p.m.

Waynesboro Parks and Recreation Director Dwayne Jones said there are sometimes issues with the gate timer, so they will update their Facebook page when they are confident the timer is set properly and all the kinks are worked out.

Waynesboro’s newest park opened last June with a 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. schedule.

However, it shifted to close at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4 when Standard Time kicked in.

Sunset Park is located at 300 N. Winchester Ave. behind the recycling center on Delphine Avenue. The 107-acre property was previously home to a city landfill. It has now been transformed and includes an overlook, pavilion, restrooms and a walking/biking trail.

Wayfinding signs are posted to make finding the park easier.

There are plans to add three additional trails to the park some time later this year with funding through a grant from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
