VCU scores knockout of George Mason in battle of A-10 heavyweights

VCU trailed George Mason by one at halftime in the matchup of A-10 heavyweights on Saturday, before the Rams seized control with a big second half, on the way to a convincing 70-54 win.

It was 24-23 VCU at the break, with both teams shooting under 30 percent.

The Rams (22-5, 12-2 A-10, NET: 31) broke the game open with a 15-0 run over a 4:18 stretch that gave the home team a double-digit lead.

Mason (21-6, 12-2 A-10, NET: 61) would hang around, getting back to single digits on a three from senior Darius Maddox that cut the VCU lead to 57-48 with 3:53 to go.

A 12-1 VCU run closed it out from there.

The Rams shot 51.7 percent in the second half, and forced nine George Mason turnovers in the final 20 minutes.

VCU grad-senior guard Max Shulga poured in 22 points to lead three Rams in double figures.

Grad-senior guard Jack Clark added 12 points and nine rebounds, and grad-senior guard Phillip Russell added 11 points.

Maddox and KD Johnson each had 12 points for the Patriots, who got 10 points and eight rebounds from Jalen Haynes.
