Update: Most students return to JMU’s Garber Hall dorm after fire extinguished

Two sections of Garber Hall at James Madison University have been re-opened after a fire on the third floor of the dorm on Thursday night.

Impacted students were given hotel space overnight.

For students in the suite area where the fire occurred, the university has provided a hotel for several nights to allow cleaning crews to finish their work.

All students were safely evacuated in the fire, and there were no reported injuries, according to a university spokesperson.

“The university is incredibly grateful for the collaboration of partners across campus, the resident advisers and hall director helping support their peers, and our local public safety community,” said Mary-Hope Vass, JMU’s assistant vice president of communications and spokesperson. “Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our students.”

Local fire and emergency personnel responded to a call at 9:12 p.m. for a fire on a third-floor unit of a dorm in the Village residence hall area of campus.

The Harrisonburg Fire Department marked the fire under control approximately one hour later at 10:24 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

Students were encouraged to contact their families to confirm their safety.

The public is asked to avoid the Village area until further notice.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
