A Charlottesville woman is dead after she was struck in a crosswalk at South First Street and Elliot Avenue on Thursday. The pedestrian-vehicle crash occurred at 7:25 p.m.
Mamawa Simai, 64, was transported to the University of Virginia Hospital for treatment; however, she did not survive. Simai was reportedly walking to work.
Matthew Christian Kozub, 19, of Louisa County, was the driver of the involved vehicle. He has been taken into custody for an unrelated assault warrant out of Louisa County. He is currently being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
Kozub did remain on the scene after the crash. A witness was also interviewed by police.
Charlottesville Police’s traffic unit will consult with the Commonwealth Attorney before a decision is made on potential charges related to the crash.
