A local union leader e-mailed me yesterday in reference to our Top Story (“The other side of discrimination,” May 26 AFP) to weigh in on the issue of race discrimination in the workplace in the Shenandoah Valley.

Allen Layman wrote to relate the story of another incident at the Hershey Chocolate of Virginia plant from a few years back. An African American man was fired from his job after confronting a truck driver at the plant who had made derogatory racial statements to him and took a swing at him, according to Layman. The man was fired, Layman wrote, “because they said they have zero tolerance for workplace violence.”

I had heard about this story in the course of reporting on “The other side of discrimination” from multiple sources.

If you have a story involving workplace discrimination to share, please write me at [email protected].
