Will Riley, who had committed to UVA out of the transfer portal last month, signed with Seattle, who had taken him in the eighth round of the 2024 MLB Draft last week, for $120,000.

Riley, a right-handed pitcher who spent three seasons at VMI, would have competed for a spot in the weekend rotation at Virginia in 2025.

I’m more than a little surprised that he signed for just $120,000, which after taxes and agent fees will come out to more like $75,000 in his bank account.

His inner circle clearly thinks this is the best he could hope for, even with a year to showcase himself at UVA and in the ACC.

In other news:

  • Incoming shortstop recruit Caleb Bonemer got a $3 million signing bonus from the Chicago White Sox, which took him in the second round with the 43rd pick. Luke Dickerson, another high-school shortstop who went 44th to the Washington Nationals, is still unsigned.
  • Another recruit taken in the second round, right-handed pitcher Bryce Meccage, has reportedly signed with Milwaukee, but the MLB.com Draft Tracker isn’t registering the signing.
  • Third-year outfielder Anthony Stephan, taken in the 13th round by Cincinnati, signed with the Reds for the standard third-day $150,000 bonus. Stephan would have figured into the everyday lineup as a corner outfielder in 2025.
