Macon holds off Eagles, 74-64

Randolph-Macon took a 10-point lead midway through the first half and held off the Bridgewater College Eagles the rest of the way for a 74-64 ODAC victory Saturday afternoon..

Both teams shot light out early in the game with the score tied at 16-16. Adam Desgain then knocked down a 3-pointer to start a 12-0 Yellow Jackets run, putting the hosts on top 28-16 2ith 10:39 left in the first half.

The Eagles responded with six straight points, four by Ronnie Thomas, to slice the margin in half with 9:26 on the clock.

Bridgewater stayed close the rest of the half and pulled to within four, 35-31, on a layup by Aaron Adams with 5:29 left in the half. At the break, the Eagles trailed by seven, 42-35.

Calvin Croskey opened the second half with a 3-pointer to push the Jackets lead back to double-figures, but the Eagles would not go away.

The Jackets led by 12 points, 61-49, midway through the second half, but the Eagles put together a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to four.

Adams hit two free throws and Tavis Stapleton connected from long range to trim the margin to seven. A jumper by Adams made it a five-point game before two free throws by Macon’s Croskey made the score 63-56. Kenneth Waugh then knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers and the Eagles trailed by just a point, 63-62, with 8:37 left.

The Jackets outscored the Eagles 11-2 the rest of the way as Bridgewater failed to score from the field in the final 8:37 of play.

Three Eagles reached double figures with Waugh leading the way with 19 points. Adams scored 16 and Ed Reddick added 11.

Croskey paced the Yellow Jackets, now 11-3 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC, with 17 points.

The Eagles held a 34-32 advantage on the boards with Reddick leading the team with six rebounds.

Bridgewater, now 4-9 overall and 1-3 in the ODAC has lost seven straight. The Eagles are back in action Wednesday evening when they host Guilford College.
