Liberty Baseball coach Scott Jackson has stepped down after back-to-back sub-.500 seasons.

The school announced the move in a press release in which it was reported that Jackson had resigned “to pursue other opportunities in college baseball.”

According to multiple reports, Jackson is heading back to Chapel Hill for a job on the staff of UNC baseball coach Scott Forbes.

Jackson was a member of the coaching staff at North Carolina from 2009-2016 before taking the head-coaching job at Liberty.

It still can’t be a coincidence that he’s heading back to Tobacco Road after Liberty slumped to a 24-34 finish in the 2024 season, after a 27-31 record in 2023.

Jackson, before the recent run of mediocrity, had led Liberty to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, in 2019, 2021 and 2022 – there was no NCAA Tournament in 2020 because of the COVID pandemic.

The Flames were 40-19 in 2019, 41-16 in 2021 and 37-23 in 2022.

Jackson’s eight-year tenure at Liberty ends with him posting a career record of 246-181.

“I deeply appreciate Coach Jackson’s many contributions to Liberty baseball over the past eight seasons,” said Ian McCaw, the athletics director at Liberty. “His efforts led the program to great success on the field while providing an exceptional, Christ-centered experience for our student-athletes. We are excited to build on the strong foundation in place including outstanding facilities, resources and support.”
