#9 JMU women's lax wins in OT

The ninth-ranked James Madison women’s lacrosse team scored twice in overtime to pull out an 11-9 victory over number 17 William and Mary Sunday afternoon.

With the victory the Dukes maintained first place in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 3-0 league record. JMU upped its overall record to 9-2 as the Dukes won their third game in a row.

W&M has a 6-5 overall record and is 1-1 in conference play.

JMU junior Ariel Lane (Vero Beach , Fla./Vero Beach) and redshirt sophomore Casey Ancarrow (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) led the Dukes in scoring with three goals each, and both players scored a goal in overtime. Lane also tallied the tying goal with 6:50 left in regulation to force overtime play.

In regulation play the game was tied five times, and the Dukes held a lead only once. Trailing 5-3 with 10:24 left in the first half, JMU closed the half with three unanswered goals to claim a 6-5 advantage at halftime.

However, W&M opened the second period with a 3-0 scoring run to go up 8-6 with 20:46 on the clock.

But JMU out-shot W&M 6-1 and outscored the Tribe 3-1 in the remainder of the second half to tie the game at 9-9 and send the match into a six-minute overtime period.

Junior Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy) scored with 17:44 left, then senior Mary Kate Lomady (Abington, Pa./Abington) tied the game at 8-8 with a goal at 13:02.

W&M went back on top 9-8 when Jenna Dougherty scored off a pass from Maggie Anderson at 8:51.

Lane’s tying goal came off a pass from Lomady at the 6:50 mark.

In overtime, the Dukes scored on their only two shots of the period, while W&M took only one shot, which was stopped by redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest). Ancarrow scored what proved to be the game-winner with 3:11 remaining, and then Menghetti saved a shot by Grace Golden to give the Dukes the ball back. For the final Dukes’ goal, junior Ashley Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton) sent a pass to Lane, who scored with just 11 seconds on the clock.

In addition to Lane and Ancarrow’s three goals, Lomady added two goals and an assist.

Dukes’ junior Annie Brophy (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) led the team in caused turnovers with two. Ancarrow had a game-high four draw controls, and junior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) had three draw controls.

Menghetti finished with six saves and also had a game-high six ground balls. Ancarrow had three ground balls on the day.

W&M was led in scoring by Ashley Holofcenter and Taelor Salmon, each with two goals and an assist, and by Kyrstin Mackrides with two goals. Tribe goalie Emily Geary made nine saves.
