The No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers (7-3, 0-1 ACC) received two goals apiece from Rhamel Bratton and Chris Bocklet, but it wasn’t enough as the No. 10 Maryland Terrapins (7-2, 1-2 ACC) were victorious in front of 10,545 fans on Saturday, 12-7, inside Scott Stadium. The contest was UVa’s first inside the football stadium since 1995.

Virginia has back-to-back losses for the first time since the 2007 season, and back-to-back regular season losses for the first time since the 2004 season.

“I don’t think we ever stopped playing,” said Virginia head coach Dom Starsia. “They were just sharper and took advantage on our defensive end. We had some chances that we didn’t drop, but their goalie played well as did Adam [Ghitelman]. For us it was not good enough, especially in the second half. I wouldn’t go too much with our effort or intent coming out of halftime, but clearly we just didn’t get the job done. I credit Maryland with some responsibility of that as well.”

Things looked bright early for the Cavaliers when Steele Stanwick scored with 11:32 left in the first quarter, giving UVa the 1-0 lead. Goals by Maryland’s John Haus and Ryan Young put Maryland up, 2-1, after one quarter of play.

Virginia scored the next three goals, jumping out to a 4-2 advantage with 9:31 left to play before the intermission. Coling Briggs, John Haldy and Bratton all scored in the span.

Owen Blye scored on a Jesse Bernhardt pass, cutting the Maryland deficit back to one goal, 4-3. Bratton scored with 5:30 left in the second quarter, giving UVa a two-goal advantage for the final time, 5-4.

Maryland scored the next seven goals, taking a 10-5 lead. Joe Cummings scored an extra-man goal with 4:37 left in the second quarter, sending the game into the break with UVa ahead 5-4.

The Terrapins scored four goals in the third quarter and two more to start the fourth quarter before Bocklet’s score with 10:09 left in the game ended the run. Cummings scored three goals in the frame and Haus had one.

Haus and Young scored in the fourth quarter, giving Maryland a 12-6 lead. Bocklet scored an extra-man opportunity with 1:23 left, but it wasn’t enough.

Virginia won the ground ball battle (37-31) and out shot Maryland (34-27). Maryland won faceoffs (14-8) and had more saves (12-11).

Cummings and Haus, who each had four goals, while Young had six points on four assists, led Maryland.

Virginia is back in action on Saturday when North Carolina comes to Klöckner Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN at noon.

Augusta County voters: A resounding ‘no’ on school construction tax

Augusta County voters, known for kicking themselves in the genitals, shot down, by a wide margin, millions of dollars for school construction from a 1 percent local sales tax that none of them would have noticed. Instead, they either get property-tax increases, or, more likely, schools that will continue to fall in on themselves. You...
