A Michigan man is in custody on rape and strangulation charges stemming from an incident at the Holiday Inn in Staunton on Thursday.

Daryl C. Riley, 39 of Grand Rapids, Mich., is being held in Middle River Regional Jail.

Augusta County sheriff’s eputies had been dispatched to the Holiday Inn, located at 152 Fairway Lane, Staunton, for a welfare check at 10:26 p.m. Thursday.

Several deputies responded and began searching for a woman who was described as being in distress. Once located, the woman made statements that she had been assaulted.

Investigators determined that Riley, an over-the-road truck driver who was staying at the hotel, and the victim, a Virginia woman in her 40s who was also staying at the hotel, casually met earlier that evening in the hotel restaurant.

If anyone has any information about this investigation, please contact Inv Ron Reid of the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office at 540-245-5333 or Crime Stoppers at 800-322-2017.
