DEQ environmental justice project seeks stakeholder input

Virginia DEQA Virginia DEQ project to take environmental justice from ideas to reality is entering phase two.

Skeo Solutions, led by nationally recognized expert on environmental justice Michael J. Lythcott, has completed research and an assessment of DEQ’s statutory authority across air, water and land programs.

The next phase of the project is focused on conducting interviews with a broad cross-section of stakeholders.

The interviews will gather information about experiences with environmental justice and DEQ’s programs, strengths and weaknesses of related efforts in the commonwealth, and short- and long-term recommendations for improvements.

Skeo will begin reaching out to those selected for interviews this week.

Following the interview process, Skeo will hold a series of webinars – open to the public – to share themes and feedback learned during the interview process. A survey will be available following each webinar so that anyone wishing to provide additional comment has the opportunity to do so. More details on the webinars and survey will be shared as soon as they become available.

Feedback from interviewees and webinar participants will be incorporated into Skeo’s final recommendation report to DEQ, which will identify options and make recommendations for a strategic approach to environmental justice in DEQ programs.

The final report is expected to be completed this year.
