An assessment center is the name given to the process of being examined on your suitability for employment at a certain organization. Assessment centers are standardized evaluations, and usually take the form of a test, interview or discussion. More and more organizations are using this process to ensure they get the best candidates for the job.

And now we’ve put together the insider insight that Wikipedia just doesn’t have, to help you prepare for the big day.

1. It can be nerve-wracking

There’s no getting around the fact that the test environment is likely to make you a bit nervous – it’s human nature to dislike being assessed. And even though we can’t offer a magic solution for ridding yourself completely of nerves, the more you prepare for the big day, the more confident you’ll feel. It’s that simple!

2. You’ll be taken out of your comfort zone

The point of the assessment center is to challenge you and tease out your strengths and weaknesses. As a result, even the most competent of candidates will find the day challenging. So don’t panic. Instead, remind yourself of the areas you’re stronger at, and make sure you show them off.

3. It’ll pass in a flash

You may not be looking forward to it, but the day really will go quickly. You’ll be so engaged in what you’re doing that you won’t notice the clock ticking and before you know it the day will be over and you can breathe a sigh of relief.

4. You can prepare yourself

The best way to prepare yourself is to practice aptitude tests, key interview techniques and confidence boosting tricks. All these things will help you to showcase the best of yourself on the day, and show employers you’re the right candidate for the job.

5. It’ll all be worth it in the end

It may seem like a daunting day, but at the end of it you’ll look back and feel really proud of yourself for getting through it. And you never know, you might even enjoy it!

It might not seem like it, but assessment centers have been designed to help bring out the best in each and every candidate. The best thing you can try and do is channel any nerves you have into practice, preparation and confidence. We know you can do it!
