Winners and Losers column by Chris Graham

WINNER: The Staunton porn-shop guy

I can’t imagine that a startup porn shop could afford a lot of advertising.
So … could it be that the media and political controversy that has resulted from the news that he’s getting ready to open in Staunton could have been everything that he ever wanted and more than he could have dreamed for?
I dunno …

PUSH: Meadowcreek Parkway a step closer to reality?
I, for one, don’t believe it.
I mean … I worked as a cub reporter in Charlottesville back at the turn of the decade, and I don’t know how many times I wrote stories headlined something similar.
This one is a perfect example of how all politics is local, and most of it is bunk.

LOSER: Area farmers
I know – I complained earlier this week about how the weatherman is always trying to make us feel bad about how much we need rain.
But … we do. Seriously, we do.

WINNER: WVPT viewers
The station cut most of its local programming (including, full disclosure, my monthly TV show, “Virginia Viewpoints”) – but it didn’t lose its soul.
“Virginia Reports: The Latino Underground” debuts Oct. 22 at 9 p.m. – full disclosure: the director and producer is Brent Finnegan, who served as the director of my TV show.
That’s not why I’m listing this one as a winner. The buzz is that this one could be an award-winner and get statewide and national airplay.
Not bad for a station that had to cut most of its production staff and let go the Ted Koppel of Generation X in the process.

(I was referring to me there.)

#TeamAFP isn’t afraid to speak truth to power: We need you to be on our team

A reader, and longtime critic, whose last email to me, before last week, was to criticize us for “political blather” that “charades as journalism,” because he didn’t like a report on a local political candidate, took a different tone on our reporting on the situation facing Waynesboro Public Schools.
