After taking two of three in their season-opening series at #11 East Carolina, the Virginia baseball team has risen to a new height – a #1 national ranking.

“It’s exciting and an honor to be the No. 1 team in the country,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said of the news that the ‘Hoos are ranked #1 in the Baseball America and Rivals.com polls this week.

It’s the first-ever #1 ranking in the history of the UVa. baseball program.

“I feel like we had a really good weekend against a very good East Carolina ballclub. It’s the program’s first time to be ranked #1, and anytime something new happens, it’s exciting, but our players know they have to come out, compete and continue to play the game the right way,” O’Connor said.

The team is the 10th athletics program at Virginia to earn a #1 national ranking – joining men’s basketball, women’s basketball, football, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, rowing, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and men’s tennis.
