The United Way of Greater Augusta’s decision to release $50,000 in reserves to local nonprofits in the form of mini-grants couldn’t have come at a better time for employees at Vector Industries.
Employees at Vector, a Waynesboro-based nonprofit that provides jobs to local residents with a range of physical and mental disabilities, have to pay for bus transportation to and from work. A $3,200 grant from the United Way will enable Vector to cover transportation costs for employees for the month of December, president and CEO Kent Iberg said.
“That means that effectively our employees will end up getting a bonus, and they will now have extra money for Christmas,” Iberg said. “This is a perfect fit for our employees, and a perfect fit for what the United Way wanted to do to help stimulate the economy.”
The United Way made public its mini-grant awards on Thursday. A total of 13 grants were awarded in all. Twenty-five local agencies applied for the funding, according to United Way Executive Director Cynthia Pritchard.
“All of the agencies had worthwhile projects and needs; it was a difficult to choose one request over another,” Pritchard said. “In the end, the community-impact review teams believe they chose the areas that will make the most impact in the community.”
