Shenandoah National Park has named Elizabeth Popp as the August Artist-in-Residence.
Popp is a painter who works in a variety of mediums including oil, pencil, pastel and acrylic. Her subject matter revolves around nature and landscapes as well as animals and birds.
“I like spending as much time as possible out of doors hiking and biking and taking in the scenery. My art is influenced from my time spent watching and studying those things which I encounter when taking on one of my outdoor adventures,” stated Popp.
This will be her sixth artist-in-residence program with the National Park Service. Other national park residencies include Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Badlands National Park, Acadia National Park, Everglades National Park and Grand Canyon National Park.
Popp’s residency will run through August 24. Park visitors are invited to join Popp for public painting demonstrations on Saturday, August 18 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Byrd Visitor Center (mile 51 on Skyline Drive) and on Wednesday, August 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Skyland Resort. The public presentations are suitable for visitors of all ages.
Superintendent Jennifer Flynn stated “We are looking forward to having Betsy share her enthusiasm for the natural world and her talent with the visitors to Shenandoah National Park.”
Shenandoah National Park is a jewel among National Park Service sites and offers a distinctive array of natural, cultural, and recreational opportunities for visitors. The Artist-in-Residence program is established in numerous National Park Service sites to inspire artists to create and share art that not only motivates and encourages millions of people to visit and explore, but also helps build awareness and develop stewardship of these beautiful public lands.
Shenandoah’s Artist-in-Residence program is supported by a generous donation from the Shenandoah National Park Trust. “Donors to the Shenandoah National Park Trust are proud to fund programs like Artist-in-Residence, which explore new opportunities to connect people with this remarkable landscape,” stated Shenandoah National Park Trust President Susan Sherman.
