Verona man indicted in 2014 murder

david eugene vatterA Verona man has been indicted by an Augusta County grand jury for the 2014 murder of his wife.

David Eugene Vatter, 68, was indicted for first-degree murder in the April 8, 2014 murder of Shelby Bartley Vatter.

The indictment, handed down by the grand jury on Nov. 28, was announced Tuesday by Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith and Commonwealth’s Attorney Tim Martin.

Shelby Vatter was transported to Augusta Health on March 18, 2014 after falling ill at her home on Kenwood Drive in Verona. Investigation into the illness revealed that she had been the victim of ethylene glycol poisoning.

Her death was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

David Vatter is currently being held at the Middle River Regional Jail without bond. His first scheduled court appearance in set for Dec. 12 at 9 a.m. at the Augusta County Circuit Court.
