A tough night at the offensive end of the floor was too much for Bridgewater College to overcome Wednesday evening as No. 15 Christopher Newport pulled away for a 67-47 victory in the season opener for both teams.
The harassing Captains’ pressure defense kept the Eagles from getting into any offensive flow in the first half. Bridgewater turned the ball over 24 times and made just 2-of-18 shots from the floor as the Captains took a 35-13 lead at the half.
Both teams struggled in the opening minutes as the Captains led just 3-2 with 4:30 left in the opening quarter.
Kaitlyn Lehan scored the game’s first points to put the Eagles on top 2-0, but Sam Porter answered for the Captains to tie the score. Raven Lott hit 1-of-2 foul shots for a 3-2 lead with 6:11 left on the clock. After two minutes without a score, Porter hit a short jumper for a 5-2 CNU lead.
In the final four minutes of the quarter, the Captains outscored the Eagles 13-4 to lead 18-6 entering the second period.
Bridgewater continued to struggle to start the second period. The Captains held the Eagles scoreless for the first five minutes and an 8-0 run pushed the CNU lead to 20 points, 26-6.
Jessica Lam led the Eagles with 11 points and freshman Nina Novosel added nine. Porter scored 12 points for CNU as 15 players broke into the scoring column.
The Eagles did manage a 45-42 edge on the glass with Allie Coburn leading the team with seven rebounds. Coburn and Lehan also finished with four blocked shots each.
Bridgewater will look to pick up its first win this weekend when the Eagles travel to Greensboro, N.C., to play in the Guilford College Classic. The Eagles play Elmira College on Saturday and MacMurray College on Sunday.
