Women’s soccer: VMI moves to 2-1 in SoCon with shutout win over Wofford

vmiGoals by Emma Quirk and Juliet Esnardo sent the VMI Keydets past the Wofford Terriers, 2-0, in SoCon women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon in Lexington, Va. It was VMI’s fifth shutout of the season, just one shy of the program record.

VMI (5-7, 2-1 SoCon) limited Wofford (2-10-1, 0-3-1) to just two shots on goal on the beautiful fall day, and the Keydets jumped out to the early lead in the 13th minute. Sam Franklin fired a shot toward goal that Wofford keeper Mayson Liner saved, but Quirk was right there for the tap-in goal. It marked Quirk’s second goal of the season and the first career point for Franklin.

That would be all VMI would need, but Esnardo added on in the 65th minute off a free kick from Taylor Callahan, accounting for the final margin.

With the victory, the Keydets moved to 2-1 in conference play for the first time since 2009.

Liner was credited with three saves in the loss, while Ceci Keppeler notched two saves in posting her second shutout in VMI’s last three contests. Wofford finished with an 8-6 edge in total shots, but VMI outshot the Terriers 5-2 in on-goal attempts.

For the second straight game, the contest was played at Drill Field #2 due to Friday’s torrential rainfall in the Lexington area.

VMI women’s soccer returns to action, and begins a four-match road trip, on Friday in Cullowhee, N.C., when the Keydets face Western Carolina.
