Angus bull statue to be re-dedicated at new home during State Fair

state-fairAn iconic Angus bull statue has a new home at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County and will be re-dedicated at 1 p.m. on Sept. 27 during the State Fair of Virginia.

From the late 1950s until recently, the statue stood outside the Augusta County office of the Virginia Angus Association. It was purchased at auction earlier this year by a group of Angus enthusiasts as the VAA made plans to sell its office. Proceeds from the sale were used to establish a junior scholarship program.

The statue has been installed on a brick pedestal outside The Meadow’s Meadow Pavilion building, which houses agricultural exhibits during the State Fair. The re-dedication will be open to all fairgoers, and on Sept. 28 the fair will hold its annual Angus Beef Cattle Show, starting at 11 a.m.

Angus is a breed of beef cattle, and the meat from Angus beef is considered top-quality. Certified Angus beef standards were developed in 1978 to indicate a particular level of marbling, tenderness, age and color.

The statue was donated to the VAA in 1957 by the Gall family of Amandale Farm in Fauquier County. John Mrotek, who led the coalition of producers who purchased it said Virginia Angus breeders look forward to supporting the breed’s next generation through the scholarship fund. At the same time, “future generations will be able to see this statue and understand the dedication previous generations had for the breed,” he said.

Chris Jeffcoat, American Angus Association regional manager, said that organization’s members “are proud of that heritage and the impact it has on the beef cattle industry.”
