Kai Degner, Democratic candidate for the Virginia Sixth District congressional seat, will hold the first of five citizen summits in his campaign’s Founding Principles Series on Saturday.

The first summit is titled, “Ensuring Justice and Domestic Tranquility,” and will focus on issues including criminal justice reform, consumer rights, marijuana decriminalization, treatment for the mentally ill and addicted, and more.

“The theme of this summit comes from the Preamble to the Constitution,” Degner said. “In order to form a more perfect union in the realm of justice and peaceful communities, we must come together and work. I have a Vision for Action for how to create more justice and peace, and I’m excited to share it with summit attendees and to get voters’ feedback.”

All five summits are free and open to the public.  Saturday’s summit will be held at Lucy F. Simms School, 600 Simms Ave., Harrisonburg, Virginia,August 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is coordinated by Kai Degner for Congress, but all 6th Congressional District residents are welcome to attend, regardless of political affiliation. Lunch will be provided at no cost to attendees. Registration is free at www.KaiForCongress.com/Events .

The event is structured such that those who attend may create small group breakout conversations on topics of interest to them. At this first summit, relevant topics are police-community relations, criminal justice reform, reducing incarceration and recidivism, providing adequate treatment for mental illness and drug addiction, gun violence prevention, Fair Arbitration Act, consumer rights protection, marijuana reform, and more. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own issues to the discussion.

“The theme of my campaign is Listening for a Change because I know we are frustrated with elected leaders that listen more to donors than to the people,” says Degner, who has hosted a dozen summits in Harrisonburg while serving as mayor and on city council.  “These five summits, which each have a different theme and move throughout the district, are an opportunity for people to connect with each other and for me to hear from voters.”

Additional summits include:
Sept 10th: Pursuing Happiness and the American Dream
Sept 17th: Creating a Government Of, By, and For the People
Oct 1st: Preserving America the Beautiful
Oct 8th: Ensuring Equality for All
