The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is offering Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training at three locations in June.
The trainings will be offered:
- June 7 – 8 — Charlottesville, VA
- June 27 – 28 — Petersburg, VA
- June 29 – 30 — Fredericksburg, VA
Just as CPR skills make physical first aid possible, A.S.I.S.T. teaches the skills used in suicide prevention first aid. A.S.I.S.T. is the most widely used intervention skills training in the U.S. It is a two-day, intensive, interactive, and practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers recognize risk for suicide, intervene to prevent immediate harm, and link persons at risk to the next level of care.
This training is being offered to campus law enforcement officers, school resource officers, municipal law enforcement, campus and school security officers, campus and school administrators, counselors, teachers, and staff.
Students are expected to attend the full two days. Please do not arrive late or leave early. Register only if you are able to attend the full course and are not “on-call’ for other duties during training hours. Participants who anticipate arriving late or leaving early should plan to attend another A.S.I.S.T. course. In addition, participants who miss any part of the training will not receive a certificate.

- Pre-registration is required.
- Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
