UVA pair advance to Round Two at NCAA Championships

virginiaUVA had two wrestlers advance through the first round of action at the NCAA Championships on Thursday (March 17), while three wrestlers moved to the wrestlebacks after opening action.

George DiCamillo (Highland Heights, Ohio), the six seed at 133 pounds, and Zach Nye (Enola, Pa.) the 14 seed at 197 pounds, both picked up wins in their opening bout to advance to tonight’s second round action.

Nick Herrmann (Amarillo, Texas), Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) and Patrick Gillen (Shelton, Conn.) moved to the wrestlebacks after dropping their opening matches of the day.

DiCamillo advanced with an 8-4 decision over Dalton Brady of Arizona State, while Nye advanced with a 6-3 decision over Anthony Abro of Eastern Michigan. DiCamillo will now face No. 11 seed Dom Forys of Pitt in a rematch of the ACC Championship finals won by UVA. Nye will face third-seeded Brett Pfarr of Minnesota. Pfarr and Nye faced off in the second weekend of the season at Minnesota with Pfarr picking up the 7-4 decision.

Nick Herrmann will now face Alfredo Rodriguez of SIU-Edwardsville in the wrestlebacks after falling 8-6 to the No. 15 seed David Terao of Rutgers. Atkinson will face Spartak Chino of Ohio after falling in an 8-4 decision to No. 9 seed Richie Lewis of Rutgers.

Gillen will face the winner of a pigtail match between Ryan Solomon of Pitt and No. 12 seed Billy  Smith of Rutgers. He was pinned by No. 5 seed Adam Coon of Michigan in 4:22 in his opening match.

Tonight’s session of the NCAA Championships begins at 7 p.m. ET and is broadcast live on ESPN3.com and through the WatchESPN app.
